Love this little place for breakfast..been here several times (pre yelping) when I come to the Indian Rocks Beach area. Same wait staff..all locals one of these days I will make dinner or lunch.

I will give this three stars only because the service was good. Lots of old people! The piano bar is pretty fun, but not really for the younger crowd.

High prices, small portions. After our meals were done we started planning where we were going to go for a second meal. True story.

We stopped here late one evening for dinner. Most other places were already closed. The service was slightly slow, but friendly. We sat out on the back deck. The deck is nice and overlooks the intercoastal. Was quite, even with live music going on inside of the bar. The food was good. I ordered a steak and fries. The steak was cooked as ordered. Fries hot and fresh. A nice place to stop when looking to dine late.

JD's is a restaurant plagued with awful food, bizzare entertainment, and cheap beer. The location is nice, but if you are looking for a snack or drink on Indian Rocks Beach, any other restaurant would be a wiser choice over JD's. On my first (and it will be my last) visit my husband ordered crab cakes that had a microscopic amount of crab meat. They tasted like corn cakes with a few flecks of meat. Upon closer inspection, we realized that the meat was actually fake crab meat. All of the menu items were overpriced and tasted frozen. Everything was then loaded with grease and overwhelming gravies, dipping sauces, and dressings. Case in point: grease dripping coconut shrimp with a gloppy and over-sweetened dipping sauce. Another highlight: $22 for overcooked pasta with a rank butter sauce and a few pieces of seafood. There was one satisfying item from our recent dining experience. It was my Amber Bock beer. Please do not eat here. This restaurant causes me to worry for the health of the general public. JD's has some potential, but it really needs to up it's quality control.

over all disapointing. nothing good or fresh in here. The salad was iceberg lettuce for $9.50 for a chicken salad. The burger is a frozen patty heated up. will not return. this place reminds me of a good place for 70+ locals to play cards and smoke cigarettes in the patio.

Its convenient, that's for sure. Dock the boat and go eat. But...I'm not a fan at all. I pay over $8 for a fish sandwich and have to pay an extra $1.25 for fries?? I hate complaining about little stuff like that, but this isnt a 5 star restaraunt! The service isnt always the best either. I mean, the food is good, but they should really throw in some chips with the sandwhiches at least!!

Everything was sub par. First we got the early bird special and it was very obviously processed food. It may have been cooked at JD's but it certainly had been made and frozen someplace else. The service wasn't much better. Our waitress spent as little time as possible waiting on us and threw everything at us. She was brusque and made us feel like we were putting her out every time we asked for things like silverware. Then she disappeared before giving us our check, when we asked the manager at the front desk he snapped we had to get the check from our waitress but made no effort to help us find her. The place was busy and everyone else seemed to be enjoying themselves but our experience was a negative one and we definitely won't go back.

Terrible meal, swordfish was so dry and thinly cut, sad the quality has gone down, a seafood restaurant that can't cook fish, pretty bad.

Went here for breakfast Saturday morning. Normal breakfast food, wasn't spectacular, but was pretty good. We were eyeing the biscuits at the next table, they were huge and fluffy and looked very tasty! However, we had more than enough food already. I ordered a bloody mary hoping it would taste half way decent, most bartenders don't know how (or just don't want to) make them taste good. They were awesome! Super spicy and lots of flavor! I unfortunately don't remember the servers names but they were all attentive and very friendly. There were a couple male servers out on the patio, and between the both of them helping us (and everyone around us) we all were very well taken care of. I live in Dunedin but really enjoy going to the Indian Rocks Beach area so will definitely be back!

Nice breakfast. Had the shrimp and "krab meat" omlette. It was full of shrimp. Overall good breakfast for the price. The staff were great at keeping my coffee cup filled and quick service. The atmosphere is a little tacky but charming in a beachy way. Not the most flavorful breakfast, but good for those who may have stayed out too late the night before.

Good casual place. We are a family of four w two kids under two. The staff were very accommodating. They let us wheel our stroller up to the table so our newborn could keep sleeping. The staff also helped my husband w fishing information. The live outdoor music entertained our toddler. The coconut shrimp was very good.

What can I say about this place, but very comfortable. It is a beach restaurant so expect to wait for drinks and food a little longer. Happy hour is great for $2.25 well! Weds has $1 burgers and the tuna steak was a decent size for $7. The shrimp were tasty yet small. The only thing that wasn't good - the chowder... Pass on it and head to New England! Stay for the lively music if you are a fan of 50's and 60's music...

Fun, divey place, great atmosphere. Nice waitstaff, good food. Great deals on burgers on Wednesdays but very affordable food in general, too. Live music with a fun bar outside!

I can understand why people like this place, but it's not for me. If you're a beach bum, with a big family, or a typical resident of the area, you'll probably do well. There's an outside bar that runs happy hour all the time with some TVs and fans, and then there's the inside seating (tacky is the best word to describe it). The staff are pretty nice and were apologetic when they ended up with an unexpected rush that caused a back up in the kitchen. The food is, for the most part, mediocre. Salad dressing comes straight from the Kraft bottle, fries are ok, ribs were fatty (felt like they might have been boiled)... but the pork chop is pretty good. They also had a pretty decent key lime pie.

Visting IRB from Chicago and we figured that a restaurant NEXT to the coast would actually have good/fresh seafood. We ordered the Mahi Mahi which was overcooked and over-salted and the sauteed seafood platter (lobster, shrimp, scallops) was literally drenched in butter leaving the worst after-taste ever. The clam chowder seemed like it was straight out of a can and was overly salty with barely any clams. The Chicago style oysters and the fried pickles were nothing special, but better than the entrees we ordered. Just so you know, the live music caters more towards elder folks. For the prices we paid and having high hopes of having a fresh and delicious seafood dinner, we are Greatly unsatisfied. We just got back to our hotel and feel sick from eating it as well. If I was able to, I wouldn't even give them any stars. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT, unless you want terrible seafood that makes you feel terrible afterwards.

If you are looking for an upscale, "cloth napkin" $50 a plate restaurant keep looking. If your looking for "old Florida" style and friendly staff, you can't beat JD's for breakfast lunch or dinner

We went to JD's for the first time today, the steak was good, the vegetables were good and fresh. The staff wasa attentive, drinks were really good, entertainment was outside by the bar. Nice overall and we will definately go back.

If you are in Indian Rocks Beach I strongly recommend dining at JDs. The food is excellent, service outstanding, and the atmosphere relaxed. During the past week we dined twice at JDs - once for breakfast and a dinner meal. The breakfast was well prepared and really reasonable priced. This evening (Thursday) the entire family dined on a $5 steak (5 oz) each that was truly tasty and filling! Thursdays is $5 steak night at JDs. You can't beat the dining experience and the price.

Went for lunch for the burger Wed special 9-23. Have tried it before and was OK, That's the only reason I didn't rate it a number 1 This trip, burger was very overcooked and dry, and not particularly hot.. Splotch of cheese didn't even cover the meat Tasted like it was warmed over from yesterday Another food experience like this and it will be no repeat for JD's

Great back deck with Motown music to enjoy. Fun band and lots of locals hang out there. Happy hour from 11 until 6 with beer for $1.25. Cheap food also then. Festive atmosphere and Caribbean theme. Neat place to dine and listen to music

$1 burgers are no bargain! We ate there on Wednesday because someone we met raved about the place and the $1 burger special. The place has a funky beach decor and was quite clean. The live music was terrible. The burgers were ok, but a few hours later my wife became violently ill with the symptoms of food poisoning. Obviously we will never go back. If I could give negative stars I would. While I can't say definitely that the food here made her sick, it is very suspicious. Be cautious if you eat here.

Maybe I am just spoiled by sweet sage and the frog pond but this beach breakfast spot doesn't do it for me. I had the mermaid which was decent but not great. My boyfriend got the seafood omlet which was barely edible because it was covered in cheese sauce. The service was ridiculously slow. The only redeeming quality of the place is the ambiance. It's very fun and beachy and they have a gorgeous fish tank behind the bar. They also have fun sculptures out front which I know kids would love. I would be willing to come back for the bar but definitely not for dining.

Located in Indian Rock Beach just a few feet from the beach.. They offer pub food and great menu pricing. The atmosphere is lively. Indoor dining is offered with a more relaxed feel. The bar is outdoors with dining a fresco. Live music and DJ. Expect a Mature crowd.

We were greeted at the door by the hostess who was standing outside of the door smoking.... Seated right away. Waitress Brooke was busy but good. Skewered fried shrimp was delicious and the sirloin steak was great. Salad was served on a plate instead of a bowl. But the crab cakes are Not Good! Seemed to be 90% cracker crumbs with a little shredded crab. They crumbled easily and did not have any of the other ingredients like onion, egg, spices.. Also they were very dry. Worse crab cakes ever! The restaurant is LOUD, and that's not counting the music and singers and dancing out back. It is clean, the wait staff is good.

  • Roxy L.

Meh. Went here for late lunch. Food is just okay. You can get the early bird special until six which comes with soup or salad and extra side and there are lots of choices under ten dollars. The shrimp cocktail had not been deveined which was gross. The rolls were dry and chowder was most potato with tiny bits of clam here and there. There are better places to go in this town.

A cute little fish place right on the beach. You can't beat it, great price, fish cooked perfect. When you go get the key lime pie! Sweet workers and live music. Its a good meal and a good time!

This is our Sunday brunch spot. JD's is a place for the locals, but where tourists are always welcome. We try to roll in to the back outdoor bar around 10:30 AM. We first order some breakfast and the drinks start getting served at 11 AM (which is when they can start serving). I can't remember if they stop taking breakfast orders at 11:30 or noon, so it's safe to be there with your oder in by 11:30. The $2.50 screwdrivers are priced just right. Cheryl is the Sunday morning / early afternoon bartender. She'll get to know you and your likes if she sees you a few times. Soon she'll learn what you'll likely eat for breakfast, make recommendations based on your tastes and will always remember what you drink. Tip her well. If it's busy, Kacey (Casey?) is the afternoon bartender that will sometimes come in early. She is another great bartender who will remember you and exactly what you like. She is another one worthy of a great tip. Both take great good care of their regulars and are amazing bartenders. The food at JD's is good and cheap. You can never go wrong with anything they have for breakfast. Always check their specials as they have some amazingly good prices there. I've had a lot of things from their menu and have never been disappointed. The Sunday live entertainment starts at 1 PM and the performer is usually great at getting the crowd going and smoothly transitioning into the afternoon.

Maybe the locals come here to drink, since I cannot believe it's the food that attracts them. Everything was barely edible, even the fries were tasteless. My husband had the crab cakes & they had fake crab & lots of filler of something. My grilled shrimp had the taste of propane fluid. The waitress seemed to want to be anywhere besides JD's. Not a good local find.

  • Brandi T.

Our service was great. The atmosphere (though early) was paled by the party on the deck..and it was poppin'! However, the crab cakes weren't very good. They were made with fake crab (whitefish) and what seemed to be stove top stuffing. Bleh. The baked potato and corona light were good. I could suggest that the restaurant use something other than iceberg lettuce in their salad and add some vegetarian items. My daughter is a vegetarian and had a hard time finding anything to eat. Ultimately, she chose French fries and a side salad. Alright experience, we didn't expect fine dining. But we do expect that if you advertise crab cakes that you actually use real crab.

The food, service, and interior decoration can be summed up in 1 word: blegh. Food was bland and watery (frozen perhaps), service was robotic, and it was very tacky and unwelcoming inside. Allowing my husband to drag me in here without checking Yelp first was a mistake.

  • Melissa A.

This place was a fail for me. I'm giving it two stars because the service was good and it would be a good place to go for drinks on the back patio, but this is NOT a place to go for good food. We started with the Chicago style oysters, which were fine but every place on the beach does these well. Unless the oysters were bad, we pretty much knew we couldn't go wrong. A crab cake app was ordered and I'm positive it was frozen. We saw a sign for fried smelt, which is a Michigan thing so we asked about it. The server raved about them, said the owner is from Michigan so we ordered two baskets. They were terrible. Butterflied, over cooked and fishy. Yuck. Two salads were ordered, which were OK at best. Once again, the server raved about their homemade ranch dressing. It was good but not the best I've ever had. My salad was full of processed bacon bits, This I did not appreciate at all. I had blackened shrimp on my salad which again, were just OK A steak and grilled shrimp combo was served completely void of any seasoning what so ever. Really bland steak and those shrimp were over cooked. No lemon was served with any of the seafood which I though was odd. I'd come back for cocktails but I won't eat here again

  • Special E.

What a great place.... Until the server showed up and it just went down hill from there. What potential. I was hoping for a local dive bar with good eats... All I got was a Burger King style burger and food poisoning from a waitress or cook that doesn't know how to wash hands after using the bathroom. If you are considering this place I would not only say no... But hell no!!!!

JD's would get a "0" if they had it. Arrived at 11:27am today, were seated, and handed the Breakfast menu, only to find out 5 minutes later that breakfast was no longer severed. We were given the lunch menu, and then informed it would be a few minutes as the kitchen changed over. Thirty minutes later, we were allowed to order. And, another 40 came our meal.

I really like the atmosphere but never really had great food here. Have heard that the shrimp grilled on skewer is very good and see a look of people order it but I don't like shrimp. Burger is ok nothing special. Chicken strips were dry and tasteless. Clam chowder is not good. Once they had chicken noodle for soup of the day and it was great.

J.D.'s has been around for many years. There are actually two parts to this place. The outside bar is covered and smoking is allowed. They usually have a small band there in the evenings and w/e afternoons and there's a small dance floor. Inside there is no smoking and there's a dining area with several tables for those who wish to dine. There's also a bar and a piano where Phil has been playing for more than a decade. He's very good and he must have a hundred songs in his head. Many times customers come up to stand beside Phil and sing the songs into the mic for the entire audience. Sounds weird, but it's usually quite cool and people have a lot of fun. Carolanne has been behind the bar for many year as well and she's very good at what she does...... fast and complete. I usually eat at the bar and I hereby recommend the Scallops and pasta with garlic sauce with the unending salad. I can be away for a year and come in and Carolanne will ask me, "The usual?" It's nice to go somewhere where things never change. A few years ago the owner broke down and painted the exterior. Luckily he didn't get any ideas about changing the interior. You can have a lot of fun at this place, and you can have a good dinner too.

Wednesday is $1 burger night. Had a good burger for $2.50 with the fixings I chose. Happy hour till 6 pm. Bill for 2 people was 10 plus tip. Nice outside bar area too.

We had breakfast here, so review isn't representative of dinner/seafood offerings. Pancakes were decent. Coffee was weak, and had to wait a long time for refills. Eggs were rubbery, and bacon seemed like it was the pre-cooked stuff. We chose not to go here again.

    (2)
  • Allison B.

JD's is the place to go! It is a perfect off the beach restaurant. The service is great, and so is the food. The seafood pasta is my ultimate favorite. They also serve breakfast, which you can't go wrong with anything from that menu. They have live music entertainment every night, what more can you ask for?

    (5)
  • David R.

I have had both dinner and breakfast here. First, the service wasn't bad. Beyond that, however, there is not much to recommend here. The seafood pasta dish was loaded with lobster and scallops, but the sauce was thin and lacked any flavor at all. The clam chowder was ok, but noting special. The Key Lime pie was unremarkable. As for breakfast, the hot cakes were very good, but the seafood omelet was a real disappointment. There was shrimp, but there was also plenty of fake crab (the menu listed it as "crab") and it was covered with a slice of melted american cheese. If you operate a restaurant on the Gulf coast, why are you using crab sticks instead of the real deal? It also came with a biscuit that was anything but southern. There are plenty of dining options in the Largo/Clearwater area that are far better.

We ended up here on accident. We were headed to Lighthouse Donuts, but the "cash only" sign on the door sent us on our way. We saw the breakfast sign outside JD's and decided to stop on a whim (we normally check reviews first). The restaurant is much larger than it looks from the outside. It seems like a popular place for locals as there were many people gathered around the bar outside smoking and having a good time. As far as the food, it was just okay. We're not picky eaters at all, so we found it decent, but I could see how someone more particular would be critical of their food, so I will critique it with those people in mind. I ordered French toast and scrambled eggs. The French toast was similar to what I would make at home - regular thin white bread, tasty, but not like you normally expect from a restaurant. It was covered with butter, which I loved, but others may not. The scrambled eggs were rubbery, but edible. Not terrible, but definitely not great. The bacon was also just okay. If you're looking for a cheap breakfast and don't have high expectations, it's not a bad deal, but if you want a really good cheap breakfast, go to Kenny's Restaurant where they have thick delicious pancakes and fresh scrambled eggs for about the same price. Kenny's is a must return place for us, JD's is not.

Price performance is what I'm reviewing JD's by - they don't claim to be an upscale dinning experience they are a hole in the wall with good food at really good prices. I had surf and turf (NY Strip - not the largest cut but large enough and Fried Shrimp) for $11. It was outstanding - simply cooked with salt and pepper and the shrimp (which I have had both fried and seasoned before) are always done great. Beer prices are reasonable and I believe my wives cosmo was like $4 with Kettle One... They have an endless salad bowl with Ranch (which I suspect is Hidden Valley Ranch but kicked up a little) and it is very good - sometimes we go just for the salad. It's an older crowd for sure and the bar area has a piano / keyboard player that plays a diverse set of music and is a pretty good singer. Once and a while you will see an older folk get up and do a little singing which is worth the price itself. The outside backbar is a beach/island theme with good music, dancing and drinks... it's gets hopping and people are having a lot of fun. JD's is what it is - a hole in the wall beach hangout for all ages with good food for really good prices. It's on our list when we go to the beach.

This is our favorite place to eat when we stay in Indian Rocks Beach. We can walk to it. It's more of a place the locals eat and the food is good, the service is friendly and we especially like the early bird specials (under $8 for a meal). An Egret often visits, his name is Henry, and entertains guests on the patio. There is always live music in the evening. We feel comfortable there, breakfast, lunch and dinner are very good and affordable. The view is nice and the atmosphere is fun and casual.

Seemed like a cute place. From the front. The decor was kitschy but it had a grimy feel, with old rusty fans blowing from above, half of which didn't even spin. I sat with my friend on the patio overlooking the bay side. I understand this is a place that's been here for a while and the locals may support it. But the service was poor. From the attitude of our waitress, it was clear she was not very enthused about being there. (The whole time, I thought, "Smile! You're by a beautiful white sandy beach on a gorgeous day! At least try and look happy!") Unfortunately, there's more...my friend got food poisoning from a cheeseburger. Someone apparently couldn't follow the "employees must wash hands before returning to work" sign. The only positive was the price on the early bird specials. You can get a variety of items in a plastic "Beach Basket" for around $6. However, I will bypass this place in the future.

JD's is and old Florida almost touristy type of restaurant and bar. Tacky but the food is good and reasonable. The staff have been there a long time and treat you like family. Music and outside bar and deck. Inside evening piano bar, music and dancing. I would say....."give it a try or at least take visitors for a true Florida place".

Were there on a Sun afternoon & enjoyed live music, food, ambience. Returned on Tues 6:00 pm with family and were totally disappointed. It was very busy but, you should never have to wait over an hour after ordering before your meal arrives. By that point we just wanted to escape the extremely loud atmosphere and poor service. Took our meal back to hotel in take-out boxes by which time it wasn't good either. Needless to say, we will not be returning. Bill V

We stopped here randomly on a drive from clearwater to treasure island. Great idea! Yes it isn't fancy...it's perfect chillin' Florida casual dining at its best. Yes its kinda dive-y but it's delightful. 10:30 a.m. we were sat, "Anything to drink? Cocktails?" Happy Hour till 7pm $2.50 mimosas and Bloody Marys...Dollar drafts. Great biscuits and gravy, PANCAKES (better than IHOP), home fries...Super nice staff and so so affordable! I wish we found this earlier! Live music everyday!

I don't think I'll come back here again. Being a local I know there are so many other choices around here that are much better for food. Limited menu but cheap enough if you need to feed a large family on a budget. There was a lot of fun going on outside on the deck though by the bar.

We went early for dinner with 3 adults and 4 kids. They were accommodating to us and all the kids. I ordered the sirloin and grilled shrimp. It was just ok, they both lacked much flavor. I had to add ketchup to the steak in order to eat it. The shrimp pasta was good and the fries shrimp was decent. Very cool atmosphere in the dining area.
